Hands-On Training for Dermaplaning Certification
Our intensive, one-day course blends theory, demonstration, and hands-on practice to ensure you feel confident performing dermaplaning on clients.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is an excellent way to exfoliate the skin and regenerate new skin cells using a medical-grade surgical blade. It also increases product penetration and removes vellus hairs.
Exfoliate for More Youthful Skin
By your mid-thirties, your skin doesn’t slough off dead skin cells as rapidly as it did in your twenties, and it gets even more sluggish with age. You may notice that your skin does not have that glow, or appears sallow, while the surface may feel rough to the touch. Dermaplaning helps speed the skin’s cell turnover rate, leaving the skin glowing, radiant, soft, and more youthful.

Dermaplaning Certification FAQ
Do you need certification for dermaplaning?
In New York State, only licensed professionals such as estheticians, cosmetologists, or medical providers can legally perform dermaplaning. While a separate state-issued certification isn’t required, it is essential to complete advanced training through a reputable program to ensure safety, proper technique, and compliance with state regulations. Many employers and insurance providers also require proof of training.
How does dermaplaning work?
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile surgical blade to gently remove dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (commonly known as “peach fuzz”) from the surface of the skin. The result is a smoother, brighter complexion with improved product absorption and a flawless base for makeup.
Will dermaplaning make hair grow back thicker?
No, dermaplaning will not make your hair grow back thickerr. The procedure only removes the fine vellus hair at the surface of the skin. Because it does not affect the hair follicle or root, the hair will grow back with the same texture and color as before. This is a common myth—dermaplaning does not change the structure of your hair.
What is the best way to learn dermaplaning?
The best way to learn dermaplaning is through a hands-on advanced training course taught by an experienced educator in a professional setting. At the Academy of Skin and Beauty, our dermaplaning class covers theory, safety, contraindications, and live model practice, ensuring that students gain both the confidence and skill to integrate dermaplaning into their services.
Can dermaplaning be performed with a chemical peel?
Yes, dermaplaning can be combined with certain types of chemical peels to enhance exfoliation and improve product penetration. However, this combination should only be performed by trained professionals who can assess the client’s skin type, sensitivity, and overall treatment goals to avoid over-exfoliation or irritation.
Who can benefit from dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is beneficial for most skin types, especially those with dull, dry, or uneven skin texture. It is also great for clients who want smoother makeup application or improved absorption of skincare products. However, it may not be suitable for clients with active acne or certain skin conditions, which is why proper consultation and skin analysis are essential.
