What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can help improve skin elasticity, achieve brighter skin, reduce acne and rosacea, and alleviate puffiness and edema following surgery. MLD is different and distinct from massage. MLD lightly stretches the skin to pull fluid into initial lymphatic vessels, stimulating the pumping action of the deeper lymphatic vessels. MLD reduces fluid volume by removing proteins from the tissue, allowing more nutrients to enter and regenerate tissue cells. In contrast, massage penetrates deeply into the muscle and connective tissue, pushing past the skin. It is effective in softening and lengthening hard contracted muscles as well as breaking up adhesions and scar tissue.

Lymphatic Drainage FAQs

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

MLD is a gentle skin-stretching technique that stimulates the body’s lymphatic system to move waste, toxins, and excess fluid. It’s used to reduce puffiness, enhance skin tone, and support healing after cosmetic procedures.

How does lymphatic drainage work?

By applying light, rhythmic movements to the skin, MLD opens initial lymph vessels and guides fluid toward lymph nodes. This activates deeper lymphatic circulation, reducing swelling and supporting the body’s natural detoxification process.

How is MLD different from massage therapy?

Massage therapy targets muscles and connective tissues using deeper pressure. MLD, on the other hand, works on the surface of the skin to enhance lymphatic flow and improve fluid balance. The goals, techniques, and outcomes are distinctly different.

Is this a nationally recognized certification?

You will receive a Certificate of Completion in Manual Lymphatic Drainage from the Academy of Skin and Beauty, recognized by leading estheticians and skincare professionals across the country.

What can I charge for MLD services after I am certified?

Certified professionals typically charge $100–$250 per MLD session, depending on the market and their level of expertise. It’s a high-value, high-demand service, particularly for post-op care.
